Open Access, Copyright and Licensing Policy

The International Journal of Artificial Intelligence, Educational Technologies and Teacher Education – IJAIET bases its publishing policy on the principles of Open Access, Open Science, democratization of knowledge, transparency, and the broad dissemination of scientific research.

IJAIET provides immediate and free Open Access to all its scientific content. No embargo period applies to published articles, and access to full-text content does not require subscription, payment, or reader registration.

IJAIET's Open Access, Copyright and Licensing Policy is based on three complementary principles: free access to scientific knowledge; retention of copyright by authors; and open licensing of published content under the Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International License (CC BY 4.0).

1. Open Access

Concept

Open Access is a scholarly communication model that makes research outputs digitally available to the public, free of charge and without access barriers, thereby expanding their readership, circulation, sharing, reuse, and scientific and social impact.

IJAIET Policy

IJAIET adopts immediate Open Access for its published scientific content.

This means that users may freely access published articles and, subject to the terms of the applicable license:

  • read;
  • download;
  • copy;
  • share;
  • distribute;
  • print;
  • search;
  • link to the full texts;
  • index;
  • reuse;
  • adapt;
  • create derivative works.

There is no embargo period for access to published articles.

Open Access is an integral component of IJAIET's strategy for internationalization and democratization of scientific knowledge. Combined with the publication of articles in Portuguese, English, and Spanish, this policy seeks to reduce economic and linguistic barriers, expand the international circulation of research, and facilitate access to knowledge for researchers, teachers, students, policymakers, professionals, and society at large.

2. Creative Commons License

Concept

Creative Commons (CC) licenses are standardized legal instruments that allow copyright holders to specify in advance the conditions under which third parties may share and reuse their works.

The use of a Creative Commons license does not constitute a waiver of authorship or copyright. Authors continue to be recognized as the copyright holders of their intellectual work while granting the public specific permissions to use it.

Unless expressly stated otherwise, all scientific content published by IJAIET is licensed under the:

Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International – CC BY 4.0

Under CC BY 4.0, anyone may:

  • Share: copy and redistribute the material in any medium or format;
  • Adapt: remix, transform, and build upon the material;
  • use the material for any purpose, including commercial purposes.

These permissions are granted provided that the terms of the license are respected.

Attribution

Users must:

  1. give appropriate credit to the author(s);
  2. properly identify the source and original publication;
  3. provide a reference or link to the CC BY 4.0 license;
  4. indicate whether changes, adaptations, or modifications have been made;
  5. not imply that the author(s), IJAIET, or their affiliated institutions endorse the reuse unless such endorsement has expressly been granted.

No Additional Restrictions

No legal terms, technological measures, or additional restrictions may be applied that legally restrict others from exercising the rights granted under the CC BY 4.0 license.

3. Copyright

Concept

Copyright refers to the body of rights associated with the authorship and use of an intellectual work.

In scholarly publishing, a copyright policy establishes, among other matters, who retains ownership of the article and what permissions are granted to the journal to publish, preserve, disseminate, and index the work.

Copyright Ownership

At IJAIET:

  • authors retain the copyright to their articles;
  • the journal does not require the full transfer of copyright;
  • publication does not imply an exclusive assignment of copyright to IJAIET;
  • authors remain the copyright holders of their intellectual works, subject to the terms of the open license applied to the published version.

IJAIET recognizes the preservation of authorship and appropriate attribution of intellectual contributions as fundamental principles of research integrity and responsible scholarly communication.

4. Rights Granted to IJAIET

By agreeing to publish their manuscript in IJAIET, the author(s) grant(s) the journal, on a non-exclusive basis, the right to:

  • make the first publication of the article;
  • edit and technically prepare the manuscript for publication;
  • make the content available under Open Access;
  • publish and make available the linguistic and editorial versions produced by the journal;
  • assign and register persistent identifiers such as the DOI;
  • digitally preserve the content;
  • distribute and disseminate the article;
  • deposit or transmit content and metadata to databases, indexing services, directories, libraries, repositories, and preservation systems;
  • perform technical procedures required for indexing, interoperability, discoverability, retrieval, and preservation.

This authorization does not constitute an exclusive transfer of copyright to IJAIET.

5. Relationship Between Copyright and CC BY 4.0

Copyright and Creative Commons licensing are complementary concepts.

Authors retain copyright in their articles. Through the CC BY 4.0 license, they grant the public specific permissions to reuse the published version.

Accordingly:

Authors → retain copyright and recognition of authorship.

IJAIET → receives non-exclusive authorization to publish, preserve, disseminate, and index the article.

Users → may share and adapt the content, including for commercial purposes, provided that the attribution requirements of CC BY 4.0 are met.

6. Self-Archiving

IJAIET encourages self-archiving as an Open Science practice and as a means of increasing the dissemination and visibility of scientific research.

Subject to any specific editorial conditions, authors may deposit:

  • Preprint – the version prior to peer review;
  • Accepted Manuscript/Postprint – the version accepted after peer review;
  • Version of Record – the final editorial version published by IJAIET.

These versions may be deposited in:

  • institutional repositories;
  • subject repositories;
  • preprint servers;
  • authors' institutional webpages;
  • research information management systems;
  • other academic infrastructures compatible with Open Science practices.

When the final published version is deposited or shared, the complete bibliographic reference and DOI of the official IJAIET publication should be provided.

7. Third-Party Content

The CC BY 4.0 license applied to an article should not automatically be interpreted as covering third-party materials incorporated into the publication when such materials are subject to separate copyright or licensing terms.

Images, photographs, figures, scales, instruments, datasets, maps, illustrations, graphs, or other third-party materials must:

  • provide appropriate attribution;
  • identify their source;
  • indicate the applicable license, where available;
  • have authorization for use when legally required;
  • include a specific notice when they are not covered by the article's CC BY 4.0 license.

Authors are responsible for obtaining any permissions required for the reproduction or use of third-party copyrighted materials.

8. Open Access and Publication Costs

Access to IJAIET content is free of charge for readers.

The existence of editorial processing or publication costs does not alter the Open Access status of published articles and does not impose any charge on readers for accessing scientific content.

Publication-related costs, where applicable, are governed separately by the IJAIET Financial Sustainability and Publication Costs Policy, ensuring transparency between the journal's funding model and its content access policy.

9. Commitment to Open Science and Internationalization

IJAIET's Open Access Policy is part of its broader commitment to Open Science, internationalization, transparency, research integrity, and the democratization of scholarly communication.

By combining immediate Open Access, CC BY 4.0 licensing, author-retained copyright, trilingual publication in Portuguese, English, and Spanish, and self-archiving, IJAIET seeks to enhance the accessibility, reuse, circulation, visibility, and impact of scientific knowledge.

The journal recognizes that scientific knowledge should reach diverse academic communities and society as a whole, overcoming economic, institutional, geographical, and linguistic barriers.

Summary Copyright and Licensing Statement

Authors retain copyright in their works and grant IJAIET the right of first publication. Articles are published under immediate Open Access and licensed under the Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International License (CC BY 4.0), which permits sharing, copying, redistribution, adaptation, remixing, transformation, and building upon the material for any purpose, including commercial purposes, provided that appropriate credit is given, the original source is identified, a link to the license is provided, and any changes made are indicated.
