Scientific and Editorial Good Practices Policy

1. General Principles

The International Journal of Artificial Intelligence, Educational Technologies and Teacher Education – IJAIET is committed to the highest standards of ethics, research integrity, transparency, accountability, editorial quality, Open Science, and reliability in scholarly communication.

The journal recognizes that the integrity of the scientific literature depends on the shared responsibility of authors, editors, reviewers, research institutions, funding agencies, editorial teams, and all other participants in the scholarly communication process.

This policy is based, in a complementary manner, on the guidelines and good practices established by:

  • COPE – Committee on Publication Ethics;
  • UNESCO – United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization;
  • FAPESP – São Paulo Research Foundation;
  • CNPq – National Council for Scientific and Technological Development;
  • CAPES – Coordination for the Improvement of Higher Education Personnel;
  • ABEC Brasil – Brazilian Association of Scientific Editors;
  • CSE – Council of Science Editors.

All editorial processes of the International Journal of Artificial Intelligence, Educational Technologies and Teacher Education – IJAIET are guided by the principles of ethics, research integrity, transparency, accountability, editorial quality, and respect for good practices in scientific research and publishing.

Scientific and editorial good practices comprise the set of conduct, principles, and procedures that should guide the actions of authors, editors, reviewers, and all other participants in the scholarly communication process, ensuring that the production, evaluation, publication, and dissemination of knowledge are conducted with honesty, rigor, accountability, impartiality, and respect for the integrity of science.

Accordingly, the following constitute fundamental standards of conduct within IJAIET:

  1. Act with intellectual honesty, presenting information, data, results, and interpretations in a truthful, accurate, and verifiable manner.
  2. Preserve the originality of scholarly works, avoiding plagiarism, self-plagiarism, duplicate or redundant publication, or any other form of misappropriation of intellectual work.
  3. Ensure data integrity, prohibiting fabrication, falsification, improper manipulation, intentional omission, or alteration of results that may compromise scientific interpretation.
  4. Properly recognize authorship and contributions, ensuring that only individuals who have made effective contributions are identified as authors and that all relevant contributions are duly acknowledged.
  5. Respect intellectual property and copyright, properly citing texts, ideas, data, images, instruments, methods, and other content belonging to third parties.
  6. Maintain methodological transparency, clearly describing procedures, methods, analytical criteria, limitations, and the conditions under which the research was conducted.
  7. Disclose conflicts of interest, whether financial, institutional, professional, academic, personal, or of any other nature that may influence or appear to influence the research or editorial process.
  8. Disclose sources of funding and support, ensuring transparency regarding resources, grants, projects, funding institutions, or other forms of research support.
  9. Respect ethical principles applicable to research, particularly in studies involving human participants, personal data, vulnerable populations, animals, or sensitive information.
  10. Preserve confidentiality, particularly during peer review, editorial management, and the handling of unpublished data.
  11. Conduct peer reviews with impartiality, independence, and respect, without discrimination, personal attacks, appropriation of ideas, or misuse of privileged information.
  12. Avoid any form of manipulation of the editorial process, including fraudulent reviewer nominations, improper interference with editorial decisions, citation manipulation, or attempts to obtain undue academic advantage.
  13. Use citations ethically and appropriately, avoiding coercive or irrelevant citations or citations included solely to artificially increase the metrics of authors, journals, or institutions.
  14. Assume responsibility for published scientific content, including texts, data, references, images, analyses, interpretations, and conclusions.
  15. Transparently disclose the use of Artificial Intelligence when it is used at any relevant stage of research, analysis, content production, or manuscript preparation, in accordance with IJAIET's specific policy.
  16. Maintain full human responsibility for the use of Artificial Intelligence, without attributing authorship to AI systems and ensuring human oversight, validation, and verification of AI-assisted content.
  17. Do not enter manuscripts, unpublished data, or confidential information into external AI systems when doing so could compromise confidentiality, intellectual property, data protection, or authors' rights.
  18. Cooperate with correction and investigation procedures, providing data, documents, explanations, and other necessary information whenever questions arise concerning the integrity of the research or publication.
  19. Correct identified errors, regardless of whether they are detected before or after publication, cooperating with the issuance of corrections, errata, retractions, or other appropriate editorial measures.
  20. Act responsibly, respectfully, inclusively, and without discrimination, promoting a scientific environment based on diversity, equity, transparency, and mutual respect.

IJAIET's editorial processes are based on the Code of Good Scientific Practice of the São Paulo Research Foundation – FAPESP, the guidelines and good practices of the Committee on Publication Ethics – COPE, the guidelines of the Commission on Integrity in Scientific Activity of the National Council for Scientific and Technological Development – CNPq, and the Recommendations for Promoting Integrity in Scientific Journal Publications of the Council of Science Editors – CSE.

The journal also considers the guidelines and initiatives of the Brazilian Association of Scientific Editors – ABEC Brasil related to ethics, integrity, professionalization of scientific publishing, and Open Science, as well as the institutional principles of integrity and quality established by the Coordination for the Improvement of Higher Education Personnel – CAPES.

At the international level, IJAIET also observes the principles established by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization – UNESCO, particularly the Recommendation on Open Science and the Recommendation on the Ethics of Artificial Intelligence, considering values such as transparency, accountability, equity, inclusion, protection of human rights, access to knowledge, human oversight, and responsible use of technologies.

Based on these frameworks, IJAIET expects everyone involved in the editorial process to conduct themselves according to intellectual honesty, originality, appropriate attribution of authorship, respect for intellectual property, data reliability, methodological transparency, disclosure of conflicts of interest, responsibility for published content, and compliance with ethical standards applicable to scientific research.

Practices considered incompatible with the journal's good practices include plagiarism, fabrication or falsification of data, manipulation of results, duplicate or redundant publication, inappropriate authorship, omission of authors, citation manipulation, improper interference in the peer-review process, undisclosed conflicts of interest, and any attempt to compromise the independence or integrity of the editorial process.

IJAIET recognizes that research integrity is a shared responsibility. Authors are responsible for the authenticity, accuracy, and reliability of their work; reviewers must conduct impartial, well-founded, confidential, and respectful evaluations; and editors must ensure the independence of decisions, appropriate management of conflicts of interest, confidentiality, and consistent application of editorial policies.

The use of Generative Artificial Intelligence or other AI-based tools must comply with the principles of transparency, human responsibility, data protection, confidentiality, and research integrity. AI tools cannot be recognized as authors or co-authors, and the relevant use of such technologies must be disclosed by authors. Reviewers and editors must not enter manuscripts, unpublished data, or confidential documents into external AI systems when there is a risk of compromising confidentiality, intellectual property, or authors' rights.

The journal may use mechanisms for verifying originality and similarity and may request explanations, data, documents, or additional information whenever questions arise concerning manuscript integrity. Suspected misconduct will be assessed in an impartial, documented, and confidential manner, following, whenever applicable, the procedures and flowcharts recommended by COPE and the other frameworks adopted by the journal.

When problems are identified after publication, IJAIET may adopt measures aimed at preserving the reliability of the scientific record, including corrections, errata, expressions of concern, retractions, or other appropriate editorial measures, according to the nature and severity of the situation.

IJAIET understands that good practices are not merely corrective or punitive. Above all, they constitute a permanent culture of responsibility and integrity, intended to guide the decisions and conduct of the various actors involved in scholarly communication, prevent misconduct, promote research quality, and strengthen the confidence of the academic community and society in published knowledge.

Accordingly, the journal reaffirms its commitment to scholarly communication that is ethical, transparent, responsible, open, and internationally oriented, promoting quality and integrity at every stage of the editorial process.

The Editors
